How Much Should a Small Business Spend on Meta Ads?

Meta Ads budgets for small businesses, what each budget can test, and how to assess the data.

Jad Al Masri7 min read

Small business owners often ask about minimum ad spend. The answer depends on their goal, market, and expected conversion cost.

The learning-phase reality

Meta's algorithm needs roughly 50 conversions per ad set per week to exit its 'learning phase' and optimize properly. If your cost per result is $5, that's $250/week per ad set. If it's $50, the math gets uncomfortable fast.

You don't have to fully exit learning to get results, but you need enough budget to generate meaningful data. Under ~$10/day, you're mostly guessing.

Realistic starting budgets

Local services and family businesses: $300 to 600/month. Enough to run one or two campaigns and get steady leads or messages.

E-commerce: $1,000+/month. Product sales need more data because purchase events are rarer than clicks or messages.

B2B and high-ticket: $800 to 1,500/month. Higher cost per lead, but each lead is worth far more.

What matters more than budget

A $500/month campaign with correct tracking, a clear offer and good creative will beat a $5,000/month campaign that's broken. Every time.

Before increasing budget, fix the fundamentals: tracking you can trust, audiences that match your real customers, and creative that speaks to a specific person with a specific problem. If you're not sure yours are right, start with an audit, it's cheaper than a wasted month of spend.
