7 Meta Ads Mistakes Small Businesses Make (and How to Fix Each One)

The most common, and most expensive, Meta Ads mistakes I find in audits, with the specific fix for each.

After hundreds of account audits, the same mistakes show up again and again. None of them require a bigger budget to fix, just knowledge. Here they are, roughly in order of how much money they cost you.

1. Boosting posts instead of running campaigns

The Boost button is designed to be easy, not effective. It strips away most targeting, placement and optimization options. Fix: build real campaigns in Ads Manager. It takes 20 more minutes and performs dramatically better.

2. No (or broken) tracking

If your pixel isn't firing correctly, or there's no Conversions API, Meta is optimizing blind and you're reporting fiction. Fix: verify events in Events Manager, set up CAPI, and test every event before spending a dollar.

3. Audiences that are too broad... or too narrow

'Everyone in Lebanon, 18-65' wastes money. 'Women, 27-28, who like three specific pages' starves the algorithm. Fix: match audience size to budget, for most small budgets, 500K to 2M people per ad set is a healthy range.

4. Judging campaigns after 48 hours

The first days of any campaign are the algorithm learning. Killing or editing campaigns constantly resets that learning. Fix: set a review rhythm, weekly, not daily, and only judge on meaningful numbers like cost per result.

5. One ad, no testing

One creative provides little comparison data. Test several variations, change one element, and compare the chosen business metric.

6. Sending traffic to a weak destination

A great ad pointing at a slow, confusing page still loses money. Fix: check your mobile page speed, make the offer obvious in 3 seconds, and match the page to the ad's promise.

7. No retargeting

Most people don't buy on first contact. If you're only running cold traffic, you're paying for awareness and gifting the sale to whoever shows up second. Fix: retarget site visitors, engagers and video viewers, it's usually the highest-ROAS campaign in the account.

If you recognized your account in three or more of these, an audit will pay for itself quickly.
